Abstract

This research article presents an overview of the evolution of the Urdu novel, highlighting the pivotal role of the monthly journal "Qaumi Zaban" in Karachi. The Urdu novel—a harmonious blend of realism and imaginative flight in portraying human life—has secured a unique place in the literary landscape of the Indian subcontinent, with its intellectual, social, and cultural significance. This article analyses the intellectual and artistic tradition of the Urdu novel from its inception to the contemporary era. Beginning with the reformist novels of Deputy Nazir Ahmad, it provides a detailed examination of the dastan-esque tradition of Ratan Nath Sarshar, the realism of Premchand, and the modernist tradition of novelists such as Qurratulain Hyder, Abdullah Hussein, and Intizar Hussain. The monthly "Qaumi Zaban" Karachi has endowed the Urdu novel with intellectual breadth and scholarly maturity by publishing research and critical articles on the works of all these novelists. The journal's publication services have played a significant role in harmonising the Urdu novel with the traditions of world literature. This research article is an endeavour to understand the intellectual and cultural tradition of the Urdu novel while simultaneously highlighting the literary services of the monthly "Qaumi Zaban."
