The Presentation of the Lahore Resolution of March 23, 1940 in Urdu Literature

Abstract

This study explores the representation of the Lahore Resolution of March 23, 1940, in Urdu literature, examining how literary texts responded to and interpreted this historic political event. The Lahore Resolution not only marked a decisive moment in the political history of the Indian subcontinent but also significantly influenced the ideological, emotional, and creative consciousness of Urdu writers. Through poetry, essays, fiction, and critical writings, Urdu literature reflected the aspirations, anxieties, and collective identity of Muslims during the freedom movement. This paper analyses selected literary works to highlight how the Resolution was transformed from a political document into a powerful symbol of cultural self-awareness and national imagination. The study argues that Urdu literature played a vital role in articulating and disseminating the ideological foundations laid by the Lahore Resolution, thereby contributing to the formation of a distinct national and literary discourse.
