Language, as a living and evolving phenomenon, is constantly shaped by the forces of time and place. Its vocabulary, idioms, orthography, pronunciation, grammatical gender, and singular-plural forms undergo continuous transformation, reflecting the dynamic nature of human communication. Within the history of Urdu, the Deccan School in South India and the literary centres of Delhi and Lucknow in North India have played a pivotal role in shaping its linguistic and literary identity. Among these, the schools of Delhi and Lucknow established many of the linguistic and literary norms that continue to influence Urdu today.
It is within this context of linguistic diversity and variation that Munshi Wajahat Hussain Jhunjhanvi’s "Ikhtilaf-ul-Lisan" assumes particular significance. First published in 1906 by Rifah-e-Aam Steam Press, Lahore, the work has recently been revived through the scholarly efforts of Dr. Muhammad Arshad Owaisi, who edited and prepared the text for republication by the National Language Promotion Department, Islamabad, in 2023.
The volume opens with a detailed introduction outlining the life and intellectual contributions of Munshi Wajahat Hussain. This is followed by the author’s own introductory remarks and a comprehensive preface that explains the purpose, scope, and methodology of the study. Organized alphabetically, the book examines issues of masculine and feminine usage in Urdu, highlighting variations in linguistic practice across different regions and traditions.
From a linguistic standpoint," Ikhtilaf-ul-Lisan "is a work of remarkable scholarly value. Wajahat Hussain employs linguistic terminology with clarity and precision, making complex issues of language accessible to students and researchers alike. His discussion transcends mere prescription, offering a comparative exploration of linguistic usage. In doing so, the work anticipates key concerns of modern linguistics, particularly the study of variation, difference, and convergence within language systems.
More than a descriptive catalogue of linguistic distinctions, "Ikhtilaf-ul-Lisan "represents a pioneering attempt to liberate Urdu linguistic inquiry from rigid conventionalism. At a time when language was often treated as a static and formal entity, Wajahat Hussain approached it as a living organism, shaped by historical development, phonetic evolution, and cultural interaction. The book thus provides a framework for understanding Urdu within its broader social and historical context.
Although numerous studies have been written on the distinctions between the Delhi and Lucknow schools, "Ikhtilaf-ul-Lisan" remains one of the most important contributions to Urdu linguistics. Its scope extends beyond questions of gender usage to encompass phonetic subtleties, cultural expressions, and regional linguistic practices. This breadth of vision gives the work enduring relevance and secures its place among the foundational texts of Urdu language studies.
The efforts of Munshi Wajahat Hussain Jhunjhanvi as author and Dr Muhammad Arshad Owaisi as editor have not only preserved an important chapter of Urdu’s linguistic heritage but have also illuminated new possibilities for future scholarship. By connecting historical linguistic inquiry with contemporary scientific and digital approaches, "Ikhtilaf-ul-Lisan" continues to inspire researchers seeking to understand the evolving nature of Urdu.
Ultimately, the book stands as both a testament to the richness of Urdu’s linguistic tradition and a significant scholarly resource, bridging the past and the future while enriching the study of language in all its complexity.
