The dawn of detective novels in Urdu literature occurred in the mid-20th century, specifically in 1952. Before this, translations of English literature were a common practice. The name of Ibn-e-Safi stands out prominently in the realm of Urdu detective fiction. He laid the foundation for detective novel writing in 1952 and launched the Faridi and Hamid Series the same year, with Colonel Faridi as its central character. This series became immensely popular. His second famous series, the Imran Series, began in 1955 with the first novel titled "Khaufnaak Imarat" (The House of Fear). Children and young adults show great interest in his spy novels, which are a perfect blend of mystery, adventure, and healthy humour. His novels feature strong, scientifically based plots. The works of Ibn-e-Safi not only instilled a habit of reading in the masses but also popularised visits to libraries. His masterful writing combined scientific facts, psychology, and thrilling, mysterious situations. This elevated the genre from mere pulp fiction to the centre of attention in literary circles. His invaluable services to the development of detective novels in Urdu literature are undeniable.
