The Consciousness of Religious Observations in Iqbal's Sermons

Abstract

Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s consciousness was in the period of maturity, at that time the world had been confronted with the horrors of the Industrial Revolution and the First and Second World Wars. This was the period when the destiny of man was conditioned by materialism. For this, religion, Sufism or spirituality were becoming like crutches. On the one hand, the monster of increasing mechanized life and materialism was rapidly swallowing religious and spiritual values, while on the other hand, as a result of the efforts of economic revolutionaries like Karl Marx and Lenin, the world was becoming aware of a new system of government. In such a situation, Iqbal emerged as a mujtahid, philosopher and theologian and presented his thoughts and ideas regarding the new understanding of Islam in seven English sermons, which were later published in book form under the title “The Reconstruction of Religious thought in Islam”.
