This biographical and literary overview traces the formative journey of Shehryar, a distinguished Urdu poet whose creative evolution was deeply intertwined with Aligarh Muslim University and the literary circles of post-independence India. After earning his MA in Urdu in 1961, Shehryar gained early recognition through his poetry published alongside eminent contemporaries. His first collection, Ism-e-Azam (1965), dedicated to mentor Khalilur Rahman Azmi, marked the beginning of a poetic career defined by introspection, emotional depth, and spiritual nuance.
Shehryar’s life blended literary devotion with personal complexity—his marriage to poet Najma Mahmood was celebrated as an “intellectual union” within Urdu circles. His subsequent collections, including Saatwan Dar (1969), Hijr Ke Mausam (1978), and Khwab Ka Darband Hai (1985), reflect a poetic voice attuned to existential anguish, urban alienation, and metaphysical longing. Despite ideological differences with progressive stalwarts like Ali Sardar Jafri, Shehryar maintained a gracious, non-confrontational stance, earning respect across literary factions.
His poetic style—marked by subdued tones, layered metaphors, and philosophical introspection—garnered critical acclaim, including the Sahitya Akademi Award. Shehryar’s legacy lies in his ability to universalise personal grief and transform inner landscapes into resonant, timeless verse.
