Abstract

Hasan Manzar, a literary figure of rare artistic precision, has left an indelible mark on contemporary Urdu fiction, particularly in the novel form of the 21st century. His works, such as Waba, Dhan Bakhsh ke Baitay, Habs, and Maan aur Beti, reflect the socio-cultural dynamics of not only Pakistan and India but also extend to Arab and Western civilisations. Manzar’s distinctive style blends medical terminology and unfamiliar lexicon with Urdu and English script, showcasing a fusion of disciplines and linguistic innovation. His strategic use of phonetic devices—especially the two-headed "ھ" and nasal sound "ں"—brings forth a textured narrative soundscape. Through his skilful employment of euphonious expressions and symbolic vocabulary, he transcends mere storytelling, inviting readers into multi-sensory literary experiences. The harmony between theme and diction enables readers to emotionally engage with his texts, whether analysing urban trauma or rural inequity. Manzar’s integration of stylistic finesse and sound-based aesthetics not only challenges traditional norms but also elevates the role of phonology in literary criticism. His writings exemplify that prose, like poetry, thrives on rhythm, tone, and cultural memory—a philosophy that places him among the most versatile and visionary Urdu authors.
